Bus drivers are often the first district employees to greet students in the mornings and the last to wish them well at the end of each school day. Drivers bond with students, making real differences in their lives. And, it's not just drivers who serve a critical role in the transportation department. It takes everyone working together to safely make school happen for the thousands of Hays CISD students who depend on their buses.

Driver Qualification Training
Applicant drivers begin by earning of a Department of Transportation commercial driver's license (CDL). Each driver must first complete the 5-part Texas CDL written test at a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) office. On-the-road driver training begins with the Hays CISD transportation department orientation and driving skills course, taught by an experienced Hays CISD transportation lead driver. This training prepares the applicant driver for the on-the-road skills test conducted by a DPS evaluator. All applicant drivers must also complete the school bus certification course (20 hours) required by DPS.
Bus Monitor Training
Bus monitors typically work closely with special needs students who ride school buses. They are part of the route team and assist the bus driver in loading, unloading, and with supervision of students during transit. Monitors are trained by a district special needs lead driver.
